From what I understand, the Oracle system consists of "services" and "instance". The proper way to shut the thing down is first to shut down instance, and then stop the services (the latter may not be necessary for the backups). On NT this can be easily done using Instance Manager (oradim73.exe on Oacle73) with command line parameters. See the NT specific documentation or run "oradim73 -?" for the list of options.
Alternatively, you can use tha batch script that runs svrmgr23 (on Oracle73) that does "connect internal" and "shutdown immediate" (this shuts down the instance), and then do "net stop OracleService%ORACLE_SID%". The strtup goes in reverse order.
