Archiving data

Our oracle 7.3 corporate database (mission critical) is almost full. Some data can be archived to tape drives. Has anyone done a similar archiving ?
Please keep in mind this has to be an automated process and also retrieve data back must be easy. Also our schema changes very often as laws change very often.
