Yes, I definitely think you're on the right track here. After reviewing my installation and an email I got on this subject, I installed the V2 support files, which created a orahome\network\admin directory, along with the .ora files. However, I'm still having the same problem (and error) when I don't specify a connect string.

If I specify beq-local.world as the connect string, I do get a different error (ORA-12203 "Unable to connect to destination") so I'm mildly encouraged by that. But, I'm still left without any idea how to proceed from here. Perhaps an edit to this file is in order?

I've also noticed in skimming the Oracle 8 CD that there was a patch to SQL*Net to fix
a bug in the bequeath protocol for Windows NT and 95. Hmmmm. Unfortunately, the patch preceeds my version of SQL*Net, and if Larry has his ducks in a row, the patch is carried into future releases.

Any more ideas, anyone? I've added a TNS_ADMIN value to the registry -- no effect. Should I try setting up ODBC for this? Is there a simple tnsnames.ora edit that I can do to clear it up? Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Dave
