Thanks for replying to my posting. I should have mentioned in the original post that a password file exists and that the parameter REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE is set toEXCLUSIVE. The ORA_DBA group also exists, and the administrative user attempting the shutdown is a member of this group.

I am curious to know if anyone has gotten this to work without modifying the ORASHUT.BAT file that Oracle supplies. Thanks for any info...
