This question has been on my mind for quite a while now. Let suppose for a second that I have a datafile that has been backed up using a unix utility. Two month later I discovered that somebody has deleted a table that happend to reside in this datafile. I do run in archive log mode. Have the logs etc .. After I copy the datafile from tape to disk into a separate file system I am trying to rename the datafile to the new name ( the old datafile). Alas Oracle informs me that media recovery is needed i.e. run forward all the updates from all the archiving logs ... I do not care for the updates. The only thing I want is to be able to get the lost table. It contains static data that has not changed since. Is there a way to tell Oracle just take the datafile and let me do what I have to do ?

Thanks ..
