I did already set up the NLS_LANG entry in the ORACLE subkey (item 2 above); but just for giggles I added NLS_LANGUAGE and NLS_TERRITORY to see if it would help. (It didn't.)

We've successfully used special characters in other languages (notably German), and we've successfully used SJIS characters in Unix. The SJIS schema is a known entity, and installations on NT are familiar, but SJIS on NT is giving us fits.

Thanks for your help, Matthew. If you (or anyone else) has any more thoughts, I'm all ears!!
