Thanks to all who helped with this problem--such a variety of responses!.

My main problem is that I was over-thinking the issue, and should have been paying more attention to the nature of my data (which didn't require the manipulation I was trying to do).

However, this proved to be a good SQL exercise for me. I do appreciate all the input I received.
