In the absence of the exact error message, one of two interpretations is possible:

I.
The index name has already ben used for another index (*possibly* the one on the primary key).

In this case, if you really do need to create an index on a different set of columns, you merely need to choose a different index name.

Of course, there is no need to do this if the existing key has as its leading columns the columns which you wish to index.

II.
The DBA has already created a separate index on the same columns that you wish to index, and in the same order. In this case, there is no need for a new index.
