I have a medium-sized software company as a client and they are just now implementing Oracle. One of their main objectives with a new release of their product is to make it "database independent", meaning they do not want to embed any vendor specific extensions in the SQL code.

Some of the issues they are now dealing with are:

What are the differences between Informix and Oracle in terms of:

  1. Read Consistency Model
  2. Default Locking
  3. Physical architecture in terms of how data is stored and data types (Informix has an INTERVAL data type that is not supported by Oracle)

Does anyone have any suggestions where I might whitepapers that discuss some major implementation differences?

Thanks in advance!!
