Well, asych i/o is used just for the datafiles. For the log files, Oracle waits for each block to be flushed to the disk (i/o buffers are bypassed). So, if the system crashes, when the rdbms is brought back, it uses the logfile to rollforward completed transactions and rollback the incomplete ones, in the datafiles.
I am not sure what you mean by NT protecting the file-system... however, as you can see, Oracle does not really require any hand holding from the OS.
