Actually the Oracle block size controls the number of extents; 2K Oracle block = max 121; 4K =249, etc... There is no reason to build an Oracle database using 2K blocks even though it is the default size on most platforms. I have experience with Oracle on VMS alpha and Pyramid Unix and both received performance benefits from using larger blocks. With Oracle rdbms ver. 7.3 you have an 'unlimited' extent option for user objects.
