one option that occurs ... get hold of a copy of linux (runs on pc), and all its associated documentation (there are a number of cd-rom packages around which have the lot). since it is a free/cheap, reasonably stable, easily installable, fairly well-documented un*x, you should be able to find out everything you want to know by playing with it. there are also a bunch of books (*not* free, but still quite reasonable) which deal with installing & managing linux.
