You may change the database name using the CREATE CONTROLFILE command with the set database option.

• create a script containing the CREATE CONTROLFILE command by issuing the command ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE and edit the trace file. When you want to rename the database, you have to insert 'SET' before 'DATABASE'
• shut the instance down
• edit /etc/oratab (Unix)
• rename init<db>.ora (Unix)
• startup the instabce (NOMOUNT)
• execute the CREATE CONTROLFILE script
