It is a typically performance vs reliability issue. RAID 0 gives you a better performance whereas RAID 5 gives you a more reliable system. However, RAID 5 can only prevent a disk failure to bring down your system. If you have a mission critical system or a 24*7 system, you may consider use RAID 1 (mirroring). RAID 1 gives you better performance than RAID 5 and more reliable system than RAID 0 and RAID 5. The tradeoff is the disk space!
