SQL*NET enables connections across disparate network protocol communities. It works on top of TNS(Transparent Network Substrate). There are speifice Oracle protocol adapter for TCP/IP, IPX, named pipe, etc. Say if you running TCP/IP over the phone line, then you just need to install TCP/IP adapter in order for SQL*NET to work.
