if you do not specify the sqlnet string at all, the system will connect you to the database where your VMS logicals are pointing (ie execute ORA_DB_xxxxx and ORA_USER_xxxxx). You can override this by setting the logical ORA_DFLT_HOSTSTR.

We run several databases on a single node. Which one is 'local'? Which ever the current logicals point to.
