I believe svrmgrm asks you for: Username, Password, and at least a service (or database). I usually use the svrmgrl (l for line mode, m for motif).
Within the unix environment there is an environment variable $ORACLE_SID. This is the name of the database that you are currently going to access if you type sqlplus or svrmgrl.
In Oracle, a tablespace is equivalent to a dbspace in Informix. I also believe that a database in informix is equivalent to an instance in oracle, and an instance in informix is more like a database in oracle.
An Oracle database can be accessed by 1 or more instances (parallel
server). An instance can only point to one database.
An Oracle Instance is nothing more that a reserved portion of Ram (SGA) and
the existence of the background processes, of which at least four have to
exist: PMON, SMON, DBWR, and LGWR. The others are optional. ( to see
which ones are up for the current SID, type ps -ef |grep
_$ORACLE_SID)
The Oracle database is a set of database files (usually *.dbf), control
files (specified in the parameter file
$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init$ORACLE_SID.ora), and Redo-Log files.
Oracle tablespaces are made up of 1 or more Database (or data) files
(.dbf's). The tables and indexes what are defined to the database will
consume space from the tablespace in which you have created them (the
TABLESPACE clause on the create table or create index stmts.).
These Tables and Indexes that are created are made up of one or more
Extents( 1 the size of Initial and the others the size on Next in the
STORAGE clause of the create stmts.)
Each extent is made up of 1 or more Database Blocks (size of which is
specified by the parameter DB_BLOCK_SIZE in the parameter file AND CANNOT
BE CHANGED without recreating the database.).
