Cary,
I've been bitten by not specifying MAXDATAFILES on the CREATE DATABASE statement. As it turned out, the default on my platform was a measly 20 datafiles that could be associated with the database instance. This is one parameter that it is certainly easier to pick a good number for in the beginning.
