THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL IMMEDIATE AND FUTURE OPENINGS. Duties:

(a) Designs and tests local area data communications networks.

(a) Prepares specifications and plans for implementation of new or enhance networks.

(a) Designs, configures, and implements LAN/WAN hardware, software, and ancillary services for network operating efficiency.

(a) Performs or provides technical guidance in the installation and configuration of network equipment and in resolving user or systems problems.

(a) Performs router installation, router software upgrade, and connections of site to Ethernet, Token Ring, Serial, and Frame Relay Connections.

Testing Process

100% Rating of education and experience. A minimum score of 70 is required to place on the register.

(c) To achieve your highest possible score, describe fully all of your
pertinent education and/or experience for this position. Once your application has been scored, no additional information will be accepted.. Indicate dates, and name and phone number of person(s) who can verify it. Items listed are minimum requirements. Include in your responses your specific job duties, employment dates, and employers. For training or education, include the course title, content and course/class length.

For some of the following items, we have provided you with guides of the typical background needed to meet the minimum requirements. Other combinations of related education/experience may also qualify. Because the test for this work is an evaluation of your job-related background, be sure to provide all related education and experience in the following areas to attain your highest score.

This is the career level. At this level, incumbents focus on the enhancement of network operations and on the inter-connecting and inter-operability of computers and networks using current LAN/WAN technology. They are able to identify and resolve highly complex operating problems and provide second-tier technical support to internal staff. The major focus of this position is more on monitoring and resolving network operating problems and less on the design or enhancement of networks. Incumbents may be responsible for the technical support of LAN administration.

EXPERIENCE MUST HAVE BEEN GAINED WITHIN THE LAST FIVE YEARS EXCEPT WHERE OTHERWISE INDICATED. APPLICANT MUST CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCE IN EACH AREA LISTED BELOW.
(a) Describe your experience that demonstrates good knowledge of
structured wiring systems and the supporting international standards.(Descri be any appropriate vendor or other training and/or experience you have had in this area, AND indicate the date(s) of your training/experience.) [Typically, this requires completion of a vendor-based seminar or workshop, vo-tech training or certification AND at least six months experience, on-the-job training, or similar background directly related to installing structured wiring systems involving UTP wiring and single- and multi-mode fiber optics. Must show that applicant gained these skills within the last eighteen months.]     

(b) Describe your experience that demonstrates good knowledge of
fast-packet technologies in multiple locations.(Describe any appropriate vendor or other training and/or experience you have had in this area, AND indicate the date(s) of your training/experience.) [Typically, this requires completion of a vendor- seminar or workshop, vo-tech training or certification, AND at least six months experience, on-the- training or similar background directly related to inter-connecting LANs or computer systems using one or more fast-packet technologies in multiple locations (i.e., frame relay, ATM, SMDS, HDLC, SDLC, X.25 or closely comparable technology.)]     

(c) Describe your experience supporting one or more network operating
systems.(Requires at least two years experience that demonstrates an understanding of a network operating system through support of or working as a network/LAN administrator.)     

(d) Describe your experience installing, administering and configuring
two or more multi-protocol routers and CSU/DSU in multiple locations.(Descri be any experience with bridges, LAN switches, or other current technologies.) [Requires at least eighteen months experience installing, maintaining, and configuring two or more multi-protocol routers and CSU/DSU in multiple locations with TCP/IP plus other transport protocols.]     

(e) Describe your experience trouble-shooting, isolating, and
interpreting performance problems in a multiple environment.(Describe any experience with trouble-shooting problems, analyzing tools, or management systems.) [Requires at least eighteen months experience identifying, diagnosing, and resolving routine performance problems using dispatch to external service groups.]
