Trying to describe the in’s and out’s of backup and recovery as bits and pieces in a news thread is playing with fire. You “MUST” take the time to read the Oracle7 Server Concepts guide chapters 22->24 , the Oracle Press Backup & Recovery book published by Osborne, and practice-practice-practice.

I can’t describe all the tips and tricks here but to try to answer your question, NO. If you have the control file from/at the time of crash or the right type of controlfile backup, you can roll forward to the current from the last cold/hot using the (if you have all of them) archives.

Some key things to read about are the commands “alter database backup controlfile to trace” and “alter database backup controlfile to ‘filename’”.

Also, understand that if you know your stuff, you can get to the point that a cold backup is not necessary. You can do recovery using only hot backups providing you have all the pieces (think 7X24).
