I believe the recomendation is that you start it as root. I don't know if there are specific ownership issues, but it is the sort of thing that would seem applicable from a software security standpoint.

I don't know which shell yu are using, but csh is the safest since the program needs to runs after you log off. Bourne has a habit of killing the listener after you log off if you used it to start the program (this is a well documented gotcha to Bourne somewhat solved if yo use 'nohup' ). There has been mention of it on Oracle tech site w/ regards to other Unix OSs as well.
