You can add or drop a table (defined in the data dictionary => in SYSTEM tablespace) in a read only tablespace. But you cannot rename or resize a datafile for this tablespace.

You can backup the read-only tablespace only once. As a result, you are right. As the table definition is in data dictionary, there is no any problem in recovery. However, read-only tablespace is quite complicated which involves special treatment and the time of failure.
