Interactive mapping on the web.

I have some questions about building a GIS on the web, whereby users can select statistical
information they want to present in a map. This map should be generated by the GIS and sent
to the user via the server.

I would like some information about:
* which geographic database software I could use best?

I need this information because I am working on the website AgriPlus. In the near future this website will incorporate a section, involving interactive mapping.
