Performance on Netware 7.3 ( Or Lack Of)

Hi,

        Can anyone suggest a cause for the following problem :

        I have 32,000 records in a table, to produce a total value
        of these records takes 1 min 32 sec.

        When I had 31,500 records it took 1 min.
        when I had 31,000 records it took 30 sec.
        when I had 30,000 records it took 3 sec.

        I'm running Oracle 7.3 for Netware and Forms 4.5 V1.2.1
        
        I would be very grateful if anyone can tell me what's happening 
        here because I just can't work it out !!!
