I am pretty sure that to be supported by Oracle, you will need to run the primary db at the 7.3 rev. Although, technically speaking, I don't think there's anything stoping a 7.2 primary / 7.3 standby combination.

Not that I am aware of...Oracle did change the logfile and control file formats between 7.1 and 7.2, and I am fairly certain that even after the change, the logfile were forward compatible (ie, 7.3 can read 7.1 redo/archive logs, but 7.1 cannot read 7.3 redo/archive logs).
