How to set up the Connect String ???

I have problems to get a propper connection to oracle running under UNIX.

Is there anyone who can give me a hint, how to set up the listener.ora, oratab and other related files ?
I tried to use the network manager, but it is allways busy about asking for nodes and so on. But I have only to UNIX machines to connect over TCP.
I tried to connect to the same machine as well, but I got an error, that my connect string is wrong.
