I think it's all to do with ORACLE's wonderful year 2000 solution. I think that the default date format on your database has been set to use the RR year format, so when your pulling back any dates less where the year component is 49 or less, ORACLE is saying it is a date in the 21st Century, which causes MONTHS_BETWEEN to give you a nagative example.

eg a_bdate = '20-JUN-31' -> '20-JUN-2031' which is 34 year ahead of 1997, or -34 years before. Received on Sat Feb 22 1997 - 00:00:00 CST
