The bulk of the memory allocated to the SGA is used for various caches, data block buffer caches, data dictionary caches and others. Allocating the right amount of space for your SGA caches can have a huge impact on your database performance. For the best performance the SGA(s) should be sized as big as possible without causing memory contention problems.
