Q:dbms_job

I have a database with about 40 tables, which are polled for updates and subsequently records are sent to a remote host. Is a five minute poll interval too much or could I go even less? I'm afraid of tying up resources. The ideal would be every minute or less. Can you give me a ball park idea of what's acceptable? There are about 65 users intermittenly inserting batches of records.
Thanks.
