JJ,

In order to increase the MAXDATAFILES parameter, you DO NOT need to recreate the database. You do however, need to create a new controlfile for the database with the increased value for MAXDATAFILES specified. This is also where you would change the values for other PERMANENT database parameters: MAXLOGFILES, MAXLOGMEMBERS, etc. Consult the Administrator's Guide for more detailed information/instructions. As a rule, it is a good practice to specify a large value for these parameters at initial database creation as the default values for most systems tend to be fairly small.

Exercise caution in doing this, make sure you have a reliable backup of the database and all its associated system files (controlfiles, redo logs, etc).
