We use dd to backup our databases. We run on raw disk and dd each of the "files" off to the same tape. Key is determining file size to make sure the whole file fits on 1 tape (really don't want to split files across multiple tapes) and ensure that you use the no-rewind device (not trying to insult anyones intelligence by stating the obvious on that one - just a friendly reminder).
