I have been doing this without problems for several years now under unix (Dynix PTX). Have not figured out how to swap to a new tape so have to end a tape at an end of disk file.

Multiple disks can be written to the same tape, serially of course. Restores work the same way, dd back in the same order to the same disk as was used to dd out.
