I've been reading an article in the ORACLE Magazine November/December 1996 issue that includes recommendations of RAID systems and their performance issues for Oracle DBMS's.
We are migrating from a Sun/Solaris box to an HP with our disk arrays on an EMC 5500. EMC set up the drives that we are using for our 7.1 instance to run RAID S which is a variation of RAID 5.
Our mainframe system is running like a charm on these devices. This mainframe system also includes an IMS database (heirarchical). When they switched to these devices, performance was the same as before if not better. We, on the Oracle side of the house, have already seen performance hits. Our writes from disk to disk have increased to four times the amount of time it took on the Sun box.
Has anyone out there encountered any issues with this RAID S? We're hoping to move forward on this platform....but these performance hits are becoming a show stopper.
Anyone?
