My opinion:

Weigh the tradeoff between the performance gain realized with raw devices and
the difficulties involved in the initial setup, maintenance, monitoring, and backuprecovery
 of the same. Keep future endeavors in mind as well: for instance,
OPS requires raw devices.

I suggest that the filesystem should be avoided in all but the most difficult ( in terms
of that mentioned above ) environments.
