Rule vs. cost

Hi everybody,

Please don't shoot me if I'm provoking an endless discussion that has been going on for months already. But perhaps it didn't, so there we go.

I'm working for a company that makes software for local governments. Uniface, with Oracle as database. Our clients use different versions of Oracle (7.0, 7.1, 7.2). So far we told our clients to use the cost-based optimizer, but we have some reason to doubt if this is the best thing we can do. I've seen some 'strange' behavior lately. Even people on the Oracle-payroll I talked to were not really 'content' with their optimizer.

Some questions:

How well is the optimizer documented, and especially: what are the differences (=enhancements?) between the different versions.

What is the official opinion of Oracle on the optimizer? Do they encourage the use of the cost-based optimizer, do they acknowledge that there are problems?

What experience do you have with either the rule-based or the cost-based optimizer?

Thank you very much,

Peter van Rijn
