init.ora - processes parameter?

Hi,

What does the 'processes' parameter in init.ora control?

Does it directly affect the number of concurrent users sessions on a database? Whilst the dba is on his hols, a problem has occurred in which one of our applications is falling over if more than 40 users log in - the coding team are sure that their code is fine (!), I was wondering whether having the 'processes' set to 50 could be the cause - 40 users + Oracle processes > 50 ??

We are not receiving any error messages back from our application, but they may be hidden by a 3rd party product which sits between Oracle and our application.
