Thanks again for all your inputs. Here are some things I tried.

  1. Frank, I tried to edit the ora files as you mentioned. But to no avail. There is no difference in the error message.
  2. Shakespeare, I tried a ping of localhost and it seems to work fine.
  3. I also tried to re-install oracle after disconnecting from the network (in the hope that no DHCP issues occur). After the install, when checked out immediately, it worked great. Then I rebooted it, and it seemed like the services started up fine after the reboot. I left it this way for a bit, and sure enough, after about 4 hours or so, the listener restart didnt work when I tried it. The listener log was last updated at 4:25,and the lines in the log are as such:
28-DEC-2007 16:06:17 * service_update * xe * 0
28-DEC-2007 16:11:23 * service_update * xe * 0
28-DEC-2007 16:20:35 * service_update * xe * 0
28-DEC-2007 16:24:23 * (CONNECT_DATA=(CID=(PROGRAM=)(HOST=)

(USER=<user>))(COMMAND=status)(ARGUMENTS=64)(SERVICE=LISTENER)
(VERSION=169869568)) * status * 0

No longer listening on: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)
(HOST=<host>.<domain>.com)(PORT=8080))(Presentation=HTTP)
(Session=RAW))

28-DEC-2007 16:24:59 * service_died * xe * 12547 TNS-12547: TNS:lost contact

And since that time, even if I restart the listener, the log doesnt get updated. Note that I did not connect to the internet all this time
(no DHCP).

Any ideas to what my issue could be? Received on Fri Dec 28 2007 - 16:40:41 CST
