No, you don't. You seem to agree with me, that server OSes last longer. I conclude that your 8i runs on something it was certified for, or at least supported - say MicroSoft Windows 2000.

If so - you also have a client! Just open a terminal session and use SQL*Plus. No problem, no need for a MicroSoft Vista compatible 8i client.

BTW - the 10G Rel1 client still connects to 8i. 10GR2 probably will, too. And that's about to be certified. Compiling happens in the database - the client is only the portal through which you give the command to start compiling - there's no dependency.
