If you backup the entire file system, then it is most likely that the database is up and running during this time, in which case, your backup is unusable. You'll either need to perform a cold backup, with the database down, or a hot backup, which requires extra steps. Please refer   to the backup documentation available online (http://tahiti.oracle.com) to understand the differences.
