I can imagine circumstances where the driver wasn't even on the system at compile time (whenever that was). I'm not sure I've done this, but I can easily imagine something like (on Solaris):

pkgadd <package-with-driver-for-device>
... add device, cfgadm, load driver etc ...

I certainly don't see why that should not work - Solaris is an enormously dynamic OS.
