Preferred connection technology for Linux/Win32 apps?

I've been thinking of switching over to learning Linux and developing apps using a language that will run on both platforms. Currently, I've only done VB6 apps using OO40. Since that is OLE-based, I'd guess that won't work on Linux very well. :) So am I stuck using ODBC or is there a better method? I suppose I could also just check the platform within the code and use OO4O if it's Win32. What is the equivalent on Linux?
