OP,
I/O controller is generally used to descibe the hardware that is used to control one or more disk drives or access external arrays and SANs. These can be SCSI, Fibre Channel, and other technology.
There is usually a limit to the number of devices that can be attached to the 'far end' of an I/O controller, giving one reason for having several of them. Performance and redundancy are others.
