Anton, if you do not need a local database but are going to connect to the school database then all you need to install is the Oracle client software to get SQLPlus.

If you also want imp, exp, and sqlldr just do a second custom install and select the programmer options.

If you need your own db the as Sybrand pointed out go with Personal Oracle. It is pretty much the Enterprise Edition minus RAC.
