Setting bind variables or defines from applications?

I have two ways of setting session variables in SQL+, one is using
var(iable) and the other is using define. Can anyone tell me if they
have had any luck in setting such variables from an application? I am
using Borland compilers and ADO with Oracle 9.2 and 10g. I have been
asking on the Borland groups but with no luck.
