Like Daniel, I have an XP SP2 laptop and have lots of stuff installed on it including Oracle releases 817, 9iR2, 10gR1 and R2 and have never run into this issue.

You should look at your path variable and try to clean it up i.e.

• You don't have to include every installed application in the PATH,
• Try using short 8.3 names instead of long names specially if most of the entries belong to "C:\programs files"... this can become c:\progra~1,
• look for any duplicate entries,
• If you are using one JRE or JDK then you can remove other JRE paths added there by Oracle,
• If all else fails then you can launch your applications from a batch file using a truncated path.
