Changing a service name to use an IP-address?!? Dead wrong. Service name is the global db name of the Oracle instance, not an IP-address! And your SID is simply wrong; it's not ODS.

As this is Oracle 8 (which has been desupported in the previous century!), post your listener.ora file.

If you're working clinet and server on the same machine, you do not require a listener, see
