Thanks for the reply. You may be right about the CBO but I think the problem is with the Access client communicating with the server via ODBC. The query is simple SELECT COL1, COL2, COL3 WHERE COL4 IS NULL. (COL4 is a date field). If I run this same query in SQL*Plus it returns data instantly. I have also found if I use the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle the result set is returned very quickly.
When the result set is returned, using the Oracle ODBC driver, data is being paged in the background making scrolling through the data very slow.
