 On the same subject, also remember that there's a corollary to "don't top post" which is "don't full-quote - snip down to the relevant context". So posting three lines whilst quoting nearly 150 lines is rarely the right way to post.

 Some news servers used to refuse such messages with errors along the lines of "more quoted lines than new text", which is not entirely unreasonable in principle, although overly harsh on the ratio of old:new. Exactly where the appropriate ratio lies depends on the context of the message.
