I do not understand your concerns about
an application server.
First you give me the impression you do not
want an application server ("with the
impression that NO APPLICATION SERVER will
be required"), next you do seem to realize
you need one ("installed on separate server
can be used as application server").
Assuming you will have a machine with a database, and another, with iDS (so, basically, a database and an application server):
Let me re-answer the question: it depends.
on servers, network and client.
How fast can the application sever respond? How
fast will the query be sent to the database, and
how quickly will the data be available to the
appl. server? How fast will it generate the report,
and send it to the client?
How fast can the client render the page in the
browser? (A different graphics driver, or another
browser can make a difference here!)
I would say: if you have the extra hardware, set it up, and test.
