You don't need to, as date masks do not force a format, and leading zeroes aren't mandatory.
It may be the way you import the data, but as you don't disclose any details (no platform, no version, no error messages, no definition of the word 'barf') nobody would be able to help you.

A better way to do this is to consult a mindreader, or 'export' the data from Access in a fixed format.
